The Best Engagement and Wedding Photo Locations in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia

📅 August 11, 2026 ✍ The FilmKraft Team ⏱ 4 min read

One of the best things about living in the DMV is how much variety you have within an hour's drive. You can take engagement photos in front of a monument in the morning and be walking along a quiet river by the afternoon. Here are the engagement and wedding photo locations we come back to again and again, and what to know before you go.

A quick note on permits: rules for photography in parks and public spaces change often, and some gardens charge a fee for professional sessions. We always check the current rules for each location before your shoot, and you should too if you're planning on your own.

Washington DC

The National Mall and the Tidal Basin

Nothing says DC like the monuments. For cleaner photos with fewer tourists, plan to start around sunrise. During cherry blossom season, usually late March to early April, the Tidal Basin is stunning but extremely busy, so arriving before 7 AM is essential.

Georgetown

Georgetown gives you brick sidewalks, colorful row houses, the C&O Canal and the waterfront all within a few blocks. It's perfect for couples who want a mix of city and romance. Weekday mornings are much quieter than weekend afternoons.

Meridian Hill Park

The cascading fountain and stone terraces make this park feel European. It's a great choice for elegant engagement photos, especially in the soft light of late afternoon.

Maryland

Annapolis Historic District and City Dock

Brick streets, sailboats and the State House dome make Annapolis one of our favorite places for engagement sessions. Golden hour at City Dock is beautiful, and the side streets around Maryland Avenue are full of charming doors and gardens.

Fells Point and Mount Vernon, Baltimore

Fells Point has cobblestones, a working waterfront and a lot of character. Mount Vernon offers grand architecture and the Washington Monument's park squares. Together they give you a very different feel from DC in a single session.

Great Falls and the C&O Canal

For couples who love the outdoors, the rocky overlooks at Great Falls are dramatic in any season. The towpath along the canal is flat and easy for walking shots. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a second outfit for the car.

Sugarloaf Mountain

About an hour from DC, Sugarloaf offers wide views over farmland that look incredible at sunset, especially in October when the leaves turn.

Virginia

Old Town Alexandria

Cobblestone streets, colorful doors and the Potomac waterfront make Old Town a reliable favorite. It's easy to walk, has plenty of cafes to warm up in, and photographs beautifully in every season.

Great Falls Park, Virginia side

The Virginia overlooks give you a different angle on the falls with wide open views. There's a park entrance fee, and it gets busy on weekends, so weekday sessions are best.

Shenandoah and the Blue Ridge

If you're willing to drive, the Blue Ridge Mountains are unbeatable for sweeping, cinematic engagement photos. Skyline Drive overlooks at sunset feel like a movie set. We love it for couples who want something truly epic.

Tips for choosing your location

  • Pick a place that means something. Where you had your first date or where you got engaged will always mean more than a random pretty spot.
  • Match the location to your outfits. A flowing gown looks amazing on a mountain overlook. Jeans and sneakers feel natural in Georgetown.
  • Think about the season. Spring blossoms, summer greenery, fall color and even snowy winter sessions all have their own charm.
  • Plan for golden hour. The hour before sunset gives warm, soft light that flatters everyone.
  • Keep it to one or two spots. Driving between too many locations eats into your photo time.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time of year for engagement photos in DC?

Spring and fall are the most popular. Spring brings cherry blossoms and fresh green trees, while October and early November bring warm fall color and comfortable temperatures. Winter sessions are underrated too, with soft light and far fewer crowds.

How long does an engagement session take?

Most sessions run one to two hours. That's enough time for a couple of outfits and one or two locations without anyone feeling rushed.

What should we wear for engagement photos?

Choose outfits that feel like you, in colors that complement each other without matching exactly. Solid colors and soft textures photograph better than busy patterns or large logos. Bring a dressier look and a casual one for variety.
